A. I've only had a little bit of hands-on time with Omnia but it definitely looks great. Omnia's a Windows Mobile device, so it should be somewhat similar to the HTC Touch Diamond in that you've got Windows Mobile 6 running underneath with a nicer layer of user interface on top. On the one hand that's too bad because I'm really NOT a fan of WinMo and, as the saying goes, "You can put lipstick on a pig but it's still a pig" (i.e. Adding a pretty interface onto Windows Mobile doesn't change the code base running underneath). On the other hand, lots of people rely on WinMo to connect to their work Email and Outlook accounts, and there are tons of WinMo apps out there for installation.

Beyond that, the device itself looks really good. Great specs, good form factor, lots of connectivity options. Just today Samsung told me I should have a review sample by the end of this week, so look for a longer video and more coverage on PhoneDog.

Cheers,
Noah

Summer Round-Up: MOTO Z9 - AT&T

Previous Posts in this series:
AT&T: Apple iPhone 3G, LG Vu
Verizon Wireless: LG Voyager, LG Dare, Samsung Glyde, LG Decoy

MOTO Z9 - AT&T Wireless
Motorola's Z9 is an interesting phone. It's larger and thicker than most of today's feature phones, and yet it has tiny little buttons on its dialing keypad. The Z9 feels good in hand, has a solid slider mechanism, and a big, bright display. Add GPS, 3G/Cellular Video support and a 2MP camera and you've got a fully featured device that sits at the upper end of AT&T's feature phone up. The question here is whether or not you like Z9's trend-bucking form factor.

Pros: Great display; always used Apple products, have never bought a non-Apple computer, and
have followed them with both personal and professional interest since
first laid eyes on an Apple IIe back in elementary school, but I'm this
close to calling it a day and moving on to the world of PCs. Apple's
grown too fast for their own good, and quality control is suffering in
a big way as a result.
But I'll spare you the rant (wait ... did I
just rant?) and leave it at this: On a personal note, my MacBook broke
4 times in a year. Apple finally replaced it. Now the replacement has
gone and broke and the genii at the local Genius Bar said they couldn't
get to fixing my machine until after the iPhone 3G launch. "We'll call
you!" they promised. Never heard a word from 'em until I went back to
the store to ask. Apparently the part for my machine has been sitting
in the back for a good three weeks now and I can bring my laptop in
anytime for a fix.

Thanks. In the meantime I built a
whitebox machine that runs twice as fast as an iMac for about 1/3 the
cost. Only issue is I've wasted way too much time trying to get OS X
running on it instead of just diving into Windows. Maybe I should just
install XP (Vista?) on the thing, sell my MacBook, and pick up a Lenovo
IdeaPad for the road. I'd probably wind up with a few hundred bucks to
spare, actually. But I digress ... back to phones ...

On a
professional note? Apple has fessed up to the total epic fail of
MobileMe by extending their free 30-day trial of the service to a
whopping 90 days. A 200% bonus for suffering through some hiccups
would normally be a good thing, except that nobody I've talked to has
had a pleasant experience with Apple's self-hyped, "Exchange for the
rest of us."

I thought MobileMe looked pretty cool when it was
announced, but I was quickly schooled by a few friends in the
unreliable ways of the .Mac service it was replacing. Michael
Arrington has a worthy spearing of the whole debacle
over on TechCrunch that's worth a read if you're interested in such
things (or just annoyed that your iPhone 3G drops calls, browses at
EDGE-like speeds, and has developed a crack in its shiny plastic
backside).
If you're not up for reading Arrington's entire
article, TechCrunch commenter Righteous Marketing sums it up (or sums
my personal feelings up, anyway) pretty well:

"The point here is that Mac used to be known for rock-solid reliability
and that is what kept their loyal users happy when Apple almost went
under. Now, with Macs showing up everywhere, Apple is starting to show
the problems that inevitably come with a large scale operation (just
like Microsoft.)"

Video: Win Gift Cards and Phones with PhoneDog Tips and Tricks

So you're a cell phone master? trim. They say it's gonna be available tomorrow from VZW via phone and
Web, though it may not show up in retail outlets for a bit longer.
What they - and I - don't know is if Titanium + Visual Voicemail =
Voyager Refresh, or if there's actually a new, newer Voyager 2 in the
works as has been rumored.

I can tell you three things here:

The only way Verizon is going to release the current Voyager in a
new color and a "New Voyager" is if that new Voyager is very different
from the original. Think EnV2 vs EnV and then some. While VZW
certainly doesn't shy away from loading their lineup with a ton of
handsets at any given time, it really wouldn't make sense to confuse
consumers by adding a new color to their flagship model only to trump
it with a slightly revamped version of the same phone.

Whatever happens, we'll get the new Voyager(s) and tell you all about them pronto. Promise.

Voyager
debuted at CTIA Wireless last September. I'd bet money (if such a
thing were legal where I live) that LG and Verizon hit San Francisco
next month with something shiny and new in tow to show off at this
year's show.

like a slicker, sleeker, blacker Treo 800w, and while the leaked Flash
demo animation was quickly pulled from the site, speculation abounds
that the new device may also go by the name Treo 850 and resemble the
800w when it comes to specs and features.
How can you look at that phone, that beautiful, crisp screen with a new message ready for you to read, and just say "OK"? I put my heart and soul into that message - MINUTES of texting! I might not be the sexiest guy in the pool, but not everybody can be Michael Phelps. I at least deserve an honest answer.

If one thing bothers me more than not having an iPhone, it's the lackluster replies I sometimes receive to my texts. I could type out a message maxing out the SMS limit (160 characters x 7 pages), and still get just an "Oh" for a response. What's with that?! At least punch out a full sentence - throw me a bone here! I realize sometimes people don't have time to provide a real honest reply, but that's certainly not always the case.

Shaky relationships are a prime example of when one might experience texting woes. I've seen people break up, get back together, and do pretty much everything else boys n' girls do, through texting. Usually one person is texting their heart out, while the other lazily lays there and lets the other do all the dirty work. This shouldn't be happening folks, you've got to give an eye for an eye. If your girlfriend types out the story of her life to you, you'd better give her a little more than "That sucks".

Dream: First Google Android Phone Clears FCC

The HTC Dream has received FCC approval, and that quiet rumbling you hear is the sound of T-Mobile subscribers doing their happy dance across the land. HTC model "DREA100" is ready to go and appears to pack the following goodies along with its much-ballyhooed Android operating system:

T-Mobile ready 3G: GSM/GPRS/EDGE 850/1900 and WCDMA 1700 bands

802.11 b/g WiFi

Bluetooth 2.0 + EDR

A BlackBerry-esque jog ball

T-Mobile's new App Store (A repository of third-party software for purchase/download, similar to Apple's iPhone App Store)

GMail for push email support.

An analyst at IBB Consulting who says he's handled Dream personally also mentioned that despite reports of a possible September pre-sale and October launch, we shouldn't expect to be dreaming until Thanksgiving time. He also had this to say about the presence of Google ads on Dream:

The phone will come with Google's advertising software pre-installed. Customers who opt in to receive mobile ads from Google may be offered to buy the phone for a lower price, and may also pay lower monthly service fees. The Google platform will serve ads based on your interests and location, provided by the phone.

Whenever it launches and whatever it's loaded up with, Dream should cast the spotlight on T-Mobile USA for at least a little while - and just in time for the Holiday shopping rush, too. Best get to primping, T-Mo ... it's almost time for your closeup.

We could see this before the end of the year. We could see a full-on Samsung touchscreen explosion, too, given the already launched Instinct and unlocked GSM Omnia that's just begging for a US carrier release. Samsung aside, though, Q4 '08 could be a great one for T-Mobile ... Tocco ... Dream ... maybe even a Sony Ericsson 3G phone or two in there, as well? Look out for the little guy, VZW and AT&T ...

Video: Samsung Omnia i900 Unboxing

Shiny new and sealed in its fancy box, it's a phone Noah can truly get geeked out about.
So how do you get yourself said updates? Fire up your Instinct and launch an app. If an update is available for said program, you'll be notified when you run that program; it's a piecemeal delivery system here, not a giant file that gets pushed out to you as soon as you connect your handset to the Sprint network. Also, the blog post mentions that vendors could choose to stagger the number of updates they push out at any given time in order to avoid overwhelming Sprint's network or their own servers. So your friend might get the Browser update now but you might not get it until later today or tomorrow or what have you. Patience and persistance, my friends!

Me, I'm going to fire up my Instinct as soon as I get to the office and see what updates I can find. You? Let us know what you find and how it works for you. Meantime, here's a list of what should be available soon and what it promises to do for you and your Instinct.

Noah, you have very informative videos and think that you are great at your job. I have a question about Sprint's Samsung Instinct. I am fairly efficient with a QWERTY keypad, but I am so much faster on a T9 layout. Is the Samsung Instinct capable of a T9 text entry? I noticed in your YouTube video "Sprint Samsung Instinct vs LG Vu vs iPhone - Long Version " that when you entered the number to text (right past the 10:00 mark), the numbers had the corresponding three letters beside them (2=abc;3=def;etc.)...can the Instinct text with T9? I know nothing about third-party applications & such, but could their be an application or update from Sprint/Samsung fixing this issue?

A. Thanks for watching the videos and visiting the site. I appreciate the kind words, too. Lots of people have been asking about T9 on the Instinct. Unfortunately that T9 mode only shows up when you're entering the number/address you're sending a message to; there's no way to activate it when you're actually writing the message. Hopefully Sprint/Samsung will add/fix this with a software update, but I haven't seen anything yet. I agree - a T9 mode for texting would be a great addition to Instinct. I've mentioned this to my contacts at the companies, but I don't make the decisions ;-) Cheers, Noah

Summer Round-Up: Apple iPhone 3G - AT&T

Previous Posts in this series:

Verizon Wireless: LG Voyager, LG Dare, Samsung Glyde, LG Decoy

Apple iPhone 3G - AT&T

The first-gen iPhone set the mobile phone world on its ear with its state-of-the-art multitouch display, best-in-class Web browser, and unprecedented ease of use. Apple also left out many features phone enthusiasts are used to, including voice dialing, stereo Bluetooth and MMS picture messaging. Apple's new release, the iPhone 3G adds 3G connectivity and true GPS to the mix, and features a tweaked industrial design, but doesn't address any of the aforementioned shortcomings found in the first version. But the new version does include version 2.0 of the iPhone OS, which features support for Apple's new App Store for downloading and installing third-party software. And, oh yeah, the pruchase price has been dropped by $200 but the monthly rate plan has gone up $10 ($15 if you want an SMS plan) - you do the math on that one, figuring for the mandatory 24-month contract.

Pros: Best touchscreen, Web browser, and media player currently available on any cell phone; App Store growing by the day; New design features flush mount headphone jack compatible with any earphones.

Cons: Still no voice dialing or stereo Bluetooth; Google Maps GPS system doesn't support spoke directions; Early reports indicate issues with 3G connectivity and some cracking of plastic housing; mediocre camera with no video capture.

Buying Advice: Personally I prefer the metal back of the first-gen iPhone to the new plastic design, but that aside the iPhone is still the weapon of choice if you want the best Web browsing and/or media player experience available on a cell phone. AT&T and Apple apparently have some issues to work out when it comes to 3G connectivity and data speeds, and despite the new, lower pricing the total cost of owning an iPhone over two years has actually gone up. Still, it's hard to argue with iPhone's ease of use, fun factor, and overall experience. If you want a high-end media-centric phone and can live with AT&T, iPhone's a great choice.

Motorola throws three more Q9m devices into the sweepstakes

During week 8 of the PhoneDog days of Summer, we saw one lucky winner take home the Motorola Q9m. Well our friends at Motorola want to keep the fun rollin' and have generously contributed 3 more Motorola Q9m devices for us to add to the sweepstakes!

In your instinct vs iphone comparison you said with the Instinct you can download 'over the air' and the iphone you cannot. what does that mean and what does it mean to me in a practical sense? Also, what other limitations would this feature, or lack of the feature, cause?

A. Over the Air downloading means that you can purchase and download songs and video directly to the phone using your cellular connection. Apple limits iPhones to only being able to purchase songs from iTunes via WiFi, while Instinct is capable of purchasing songs from the Sprint Music Store over EV-DO (cellular connection). So the practical implication is that if you want to shop for music on your phone, you'll have to be connected to WiFi in order to do it from an iPhone. Thanks for the message
